Being important to John Connor was a terrible thing. Being important to John Connor got you killed. Got you captured for interrogation and experiments.
The people of this new future may not know who John Connor is, but Skynet still does. Skynet knows everything, remembers everything. Every future, every possibility, every probability. Skynet knows, Skynet remembers.
John Connor may not be the leader of the human resistance, but that doesn't make him any less dangerous. It may make him more dangerous. Less people following him, less people doing what he says. He can go anywhere, do anything, be anyone that he wants to be.
He's harder to track in this future. Harder, but not impossible.
When people become important to him, Skynet notices. When he finds his father, his uncle, his family, Skynet notices.
When he falls in love, Skynet notices.
They send a machine after the girl. Another machine, they'd already tried to capture her once to infiltrate a camp and kill the Reese Brothers. It was easy enough to send another machine after her for this.
Easier still to capture her this time. A machine disguised as a resistance soldier. Taking her to one of their experiment bunkers. They kept her for months. Testing her. Examining her.
Trying to see what made her important. Trying to see how they could use that. Fix that. Change that.
Improving her, eventually. Metal in the brain. Wires in her blood. Uplinks and downlinks, muscle repair and bone replacement. It was slow. It was painful. She screamed a lot. She cursed, she bled and eventually she raged.
Neccesary, if they were going to send her back. Of course they would send her back.
He saved John Connor from a slaughterhouse when he was barely eighteen years old. Carried him out of Century, away from machines and death and metal and blood and screaming.
For years, he was convinced that that was why Connor trusted him so much. Entrusted him with so much information. He was sure that the reason that Connor had looked at him so strangely that day in Century had been because of surprise. Shock that someone that young could manage to save himself and someone else from something so terrible.
It had surprised him too.
And then he met Sarah Connor.
And then he met John Connor. The younger John Connor. Sarah's son. His son.
And then he understood. He understood the why and the how of Connor's actions. He understood the why and the how of his own, subconcious or whatever.
He'd saved John Connor from a slaughterhouse. He'd saved his son.
If he could do something to keep any of them from going back there, or at the very least to keep from dying when he went back?
He doesn't know if he's better with her, or if she's better with him. He thinks the same way he always did. He gets lost in his own head the same way that he always did. Drinks coffee and tries to avoid sleep the same way that he always did.
But he doesn't wonder what she does when he's not at home. He doesn't wonder who she's with. When she helps him in his lab, he doesn't accidentally call her Sarah. He doesn't forget as many normal, everyday things.
When he's at the grocery store with his father, watching his father chat with the cashier who turns out to apparently be his new stepmother (where is your head this week, Jim asks), and he thinks to buy her a piece of candy....he thinks that it might be better.

Allison Young was important to John Connor.
